How to Defend in eFootball: Stop Conceding Cheap Goals

Ask most ranked players why they lose and they will talk about their attack. Watch the replays and the truth is uglier: rushed tackles, defenders dragged out of position, and the same cheap goal conceded three times in one match. Defending in eFootball is a learnable skill, and it wins more duels than any dribbling trick.

Jockeying vs standing tackles

The jockey is your default state. Hold it, stay goal-side, and mirror the attacker's movement instead of chasing the ball. A jockeying defender is balanced, so he reacts to direction changes and blocks shots with his body. A defender who commits to a standing tackle is gambling. If it misses, he is out of the play and you are defending two-on-one.

Only press the tackle when one of three things happens: the attacker takes a heavy touch, he turns his back to goal, or the ball sits exposed between his feet mid-animation. Outside those windows, keep jockeying. Boring defending is good defending.

When to bring a second presser

The pressure call is powerful and dangerous in equal measure. Every player you send at the ball is a player who leaves his zone, and good opponents pass through the gap you just created.

Use the second presser when the odds favour you:

The ball carrier is near the touchline, so the pitch itself helps trap him.
He is facing his own goal with no easy forward pass.
He has just taken a bad touch and needs a second to recover.

In midfield, pressing aggressively is usually worth the risk because a turnover there launches your counter. Inside your own defensive third, be far more careful. A press that gets bypassed twenty metres from your goal is often an assist for your opponent.

Defending the box without panicking

Once the ball enters your box, your job changes from winning it to denying the shot. Keep your controlled defender between the ball and the centre of goal, and let the covering AI defenders squeeze space. Do not pull your centre-back toward the ball carrier in the wide areas; that is exactly what the attacker wants, because it opens the cutback to the penalty spot.

Jockey to show the attacker onto his weaker foot, and never slide inside the box unless the alternative is a certain goal. Watch the cutback above all else. Most box goals in 1v1s come from a pulled-back pass to an arriving midfielder, not from the dribbler himself. Position one defender on that lane and you kill half your opponent's attack.

Cut the passing lanes, not just the ball

Beginners control the defender nearest the ball. Stronger players often control the defender who blocks the next pass. When your opponent is building through midfield, ask yourself where the killer through ball goes, then park your controlled player in that lane while the AI contains the carrier.

Interceptions are better than tackles. They happen facing the opponent's goal, with your shape intact, and they start counters instantly. The baits opponents use on you

Experienced 1v1 players do not beat your defence. They convince you to beat it for them. Learn these traps:

The dangle. He holds the ball at the edge of your box, barely moving, waiting for you to dive in so he can knock it past your lunge and shoot.
The slow drag across goal. He dribbles laterally along your box, inviting a slide, then finishes through the hole your tackle opens.
The reset bait. He passes backwards to pull your press up the pitch, then plays one ball over the top into the space behind it.
The stop-start. Sprint, stop dead, sprint again. Each stop is fishing for a mistimed tackle.
